Aretha Pan of Malaysia carded an even-par 71 on the second day of the Sime Darby LPGA to finish joint-64 with a two-day total of 148. AZMAN GHANI/The Star.
KUALA LUMPUR: Aretha Pan bounced back in the second round of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2013 to finish on an even-par 71 to end the day tied 64th for a two-day total of six-over 148 yesterday.
“It’s definitely better than Thursday. I went into Thursday telling myself not to feel any pressure, but that kind of backfired and I actually ended up putting more pressure on myself,” said Aretha.
“This time, I didn’t really think too much and just took it shot by shot, hole by hole and it worked out a lot better,” she added.
The 19-year-old, playing as a pro on home soil for the first time, started out on the back nine at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC), picked up bogeys on the 12th and 13th hole before nicking a birdie on the 14th.
“The birdie on the 14th was really good for my confidence. I started on the back nine and somehow the fairway looked smaller to me and it was the opposite when I got to the front and I was able to fare much better after that,” said Aretha.
“I missed out on a couple of birdie putts out there today (Friday), so hopefully I can pick them up tomorrow (today).”
Amateur Michelle Koh and Cindy Lee-Pridgen were troubled by the front nine as they finished 61st with a five-over 76 for a two-day total of four-over 146.
“I didn’t play as well as I would have liked to, I didn’t get to a lot of greens but I made some good saves. My iron play let me down, but tomorrow is a new day and I’m looking forward to it,” said Michelle.
Cindy, who started off well on the back nine, also saw things fall apart when she hit bogeys on the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 7th and double-bogeyed the 8th.
“I started off really well but I think I just got tired in the end. That, coupled with mistakes with my club selection and not using the right choices of play ... My driver was off as well as I couldn’t hit it as straight as I would have liked to. But hopefully I can get some rest and we’ll sort out the range later,” said Cindy.
Meanwhile, Ainil Johani Bakar proved she’s a real trooper when she carded a two-over par 73 yesterday for a two-day total of 17-over 159 to place 70th out of 72 golfers.
“I’m feeling a lot better today and so I was hitting a lot better as well. Today, I missed five or six greens, but thankfully my short game really helped me,” said Ainil.
