Danny Chia will be resting and recuperating for the rest of the year after a five-hour operation on Sept 5 to resolve a nerve problem.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Danny Chia is sitting out competitive golf for the rest of the year to recover fully from a career-threatening injury.
Danny went for a five-hour operation on Sept 5 to fix a condition where a buildup of bone fragments was pressing on a nerve, resulting in him losing most of the muscle mass in his right arm.
In the surgery, a titanium plate was inserted while excess calcification was removed and Danny is now confident the problem has been fixed.
He said the reason he opted out is to get himself ready for the 2014 season.
“I need four months of rehabilitation. It is frustrating as I have been working hard on my swing but I am happy that a long-term problem has been resolved.
“I have suffered from the discomfort for years with doctors unable to identify the cause.
“It took two months and three MRI scans recently to diagnose the problem.
“I tried acupuncture and physiotherapy and went to the chiropractor but nothing really helped.
“It is a huge relief that it has now been sorted out and I can focus on restarting my career.
“I would like to thank everyone who has supported me, especially my sponsors Maybank, Carlsberg and The Star.
“On the plus side, the layoff will allow me to spend more time with my family and attend corporate days, junior clinics and other events for my sponsors,” said the 40-year-old.
The last event Danny played at was the Templer Park Masters in June, where he finished in a tie for 26th.
Danny is this country’s most successful golfer and one of his outstanding achievements is becoming the first player from Malaysia to play all four rounds in the British Open in 2010.
He is also the first Malaysian to win on the Asian Tour, a feat he achieved in 2002 at the Taiwan Open.
He has twice been voted Malaysia’s Golfer of the Year, in 2010 and 2011, and is also a two-time winner on the Asean PGA Tour.
Danny has made three Open Championships (in 2005 and 2008 as well) and represented Malaysia in the World Cup on numerous occasions.
