Cindy Lee-Pridgen carded a par 71 in the first round of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia local qualifying tournament.
KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah’s Cindy Lee-Pridgen grabbed a comfortable four-shot lead after the first round of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia local qualifying tournament at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) Thursday.
The 37-year-old carded a par 71 in the rain-delayed opening round to keep alive her hopes of winning one of the two tickets to the star-studded Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia Open from Oct 10-13.
Michelle Koh and Dianne Luke shot identicals 75s to tie joint second.
Said Lee-Pridgen: “I struck the ball well today. I had some great ups and downs from the bunkers, and also some good chips.
“It would be great if I can do the same tomorrow. I’m not trying to think of the results too much, but to just go out there and play well.”
Michelle, the Warren Ford Amateur Open 2013 champion, enjoyed herself despite not having a good start.
“It was very enjoyable although I had a little bit of a tough start. It got better as the day progressed, especially since I had a few birdies to cover it up. The course was fantastic although the greens were a bit slow after the rain.
“My focus for tomorrow is my putting. I missed a couple of short putts out there and I think that really affected me,” said the 22-year-old from Kuantan.
In the regional qualifying tournament, Taiwan’s 15-year-old Cheng Ssu-chia shot an impressive two-under 69 to snatch the lead.
Compatriot Chien Pei-yun trailed by a shot after posting a 70 while Aditi Ashok of India and Thai Wichanee Meechai shared third spot after identical 72s.
The two-day local and regional qualifying tournaments offer two places in each category for golfers clamouring for exemption to play in the Malaysia Open. They will join a stellar cast of Norway’s Suzann Pettersen, South Koreans So Yeon-ryu and Shin Jiyai, China’s Feng Shanshan, Americans Cristie Kerr and Paula Creamer and Spaniard Beatriz Recari.
