PETALING JAYA: Golfers Brandt Snedeker, Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley and Hideki Matsuyama have signed on to compete at this year’s CIMB Classic - Asia’s first FedExCup event.
The foursome will now join Phil Mickelson, Nick Watney, Bo Van Pelt and Ben Crane at the US$7mil (RM22.9mil) PGA Tour-sanctioned event which will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) from Oct 24-27.
“The field is shaping up to be the strongest we’ve seen. Though still early, these confirmations are a huge reflection of the quality that will be on show at the CIMB Classic come October,” said Effendy Shahul Hamid, head of Group Marketing & Communications of CIMB Group.
The championship, currently in its fourth year, is the first and only PGA Tour-sanctioned event in the region. With Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) and FedExCup points on offer, you can expect some closely-fought battles on the greens at the KLGCC.
Looking to make it three wins this year is Snedeker. Currently ranked seventh in the OWGR, Snedeker has been one of the most successful and consistent players on the PGA Tour over the last two years.
In 2012, the 32-year-old won the FedExCup with a victory in the season-ending Tour Championship which saw him move into the top-10 in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time in his career.
This year hasn’t been the easiest for the American, but his consistent play despite having to deal with a rib injury saw him land both the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and RBC Canadian Open titles.
Another one chasing a win is crowd favourite Rickie Fowler who will be making his return to the CIMB Classic. The 25-year-old Californian, who finished tied for fifth here in 2010, will be keen to end his dry spell by lifting his first title of the year. Fowler’s last win came at the Wells Fargo Championship last year.
This year’s championship will feature a top-class international field of 78 players - 60 from the PGA Tour, 10 from the Asian Tour and eight sponsor’s exemptions. Two spots have also been reserved for local golfers, with Rashid Ismail already confirmed for a spot after winnning the SapuraKencana National Qualifier last week.
The CIMB Classic is also co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Professional Golf Association of Malaysia (PGM).
