PETALING JAYA: World No. 1 and defending champion Park In-bee will lead a field of top women golfers for the US$2mil (RM6.6mil) Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia Open.
Other big names vying for the crown are Norway’s Suzann Pettersen (world No. 3), South Korean stars So Yeon-ryu (No. 5) and Shin Jiyai (No. 12), China’s Feng Shanshan (No. 9) and American Cristie Kerr (No. 13).
The Sime Darby Foundation and event organiser IMG announced that the fourth edition of the championship will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) from Oct 10-13.
A total of 72 players will compete in the 72-hole stroke play no cut-off mark event. The field will include the top 62 players from the LPGA Tour and 10 sponsors’ invites.
Norwegian Pettersen, who has enjoyed a stellar year thus far, claiming first place in the LPGA Lotte Championship and nine top-10 finishes, said: “I always enjoy playing in Asia and the Sime Darby LPGA is a great tournament. It has been an exciting year on the Tour and I cannot think of a better way to finish the season than by playing well in Asia.”
Another strong contender is the 23-year-old Louise Suggs, the 2012 Rolex Rookie of the Year.
South Korea’s Yeon-ryu, who has shown consistent form on the Tour this year, said: “It’s been another amazing year for me and I feel like I can’t stop learning. I managed a top-10 finish last year and it’s a course I like very much. Hopefully, I’ll be able to relax, go out there and play some good golf.”
Kerr, winner of 16 LPGA Tour events, including this year’s Kingsmill Championship in Virginia, said: “The Sime Darby LPGA is always a special tournament for me. It’s always very competitive but it’s a very friendly tournament with good support from fans.”
Other leading players coming for the tournament are Americans Stacy Lewis and Paula Creamer, South Korea’s Na Yeon-choi, Japan’s Ai Miyazato and Spaniard Beatriz Recari.
