Nicholas Fung hopes to extend his winning streak to the PGM Terengganu Masters which begins Wednesday.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s top-ranked golfer Nicholas Fung is determined to extend his winning streak when he competes in the RM200,000 PGM Terengganu Masters at the Awana Kijal Golf & Beach Resort Wednesday.
Nicholas won the PGM I&P Group Championship at the Kinrara Golf Club by 11 shots last week.
Now, he will be aiming for a second Asian Development Tour (ADT) title after notching his maiden win at the PGM-UMW Templer Park Masters in June.
What’s more, with Official World Golf Ranking points on offer this week, the 23-year-old Sabahan, currently ranked 511th in the world, hopes to break into the top 340 by Sept 23 to stand a chance of qualifying for the World Cup of Golf in November.
But Nicholas, who is third on ADT Order of Merit, knows it won’t be easy.
“I’m happy with my current form but I get easily stressed out over my putting. I usually do better when I putt well. Hopefully, I can putt like how I did last week,” said Nicholas, who shot the lowest round of his career – 62 – in the final round at the Kinrara Golf Club.
Nicholas will have to be wary of the threat posed by Filipino Carl Santos-Ocampo this week.
Santos-Ocampo is confident he can win his first ADT title after tasting victory on the local tour last week at the ICTSI Midlands despite playing in his eighth consecutive event in a jam-packed schedule.
“I’m always excited to check out new venues. I’ve heard a lot of positive things about the course and resort this week. I’m happy with my current form but I still need to keep improving,” he said.
Other golfers in the fray include ADT Order of Merit leader James Bowen of the United States, Canadian Lindsay Renolds, Grant Jackson of England, James Byrne of Scotland as well Malaysia’s Iain Steel, who also notched a win on the ADT two weeks ago.
The top three players on the Order of Merit at the end of the season will earn Asian Tour cards for the following year.
