Selangor, Kedah and T'ganu complete Malaysia Cup q-finals lineup

PETALING JAYA: Selangor, Kedah and Terengganu became the last three teams to check into the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals after the final group matches.

Thirty-two-time Malaysia Cup winners Selangor edged T-Team 1-0 in their final Group D match at the Shah Alam Stadium last night to confirm their berth along with already-qualified Police.

Prolific striker Paulo Rangel scored the winner in the 25th minute to help Selangor finish second in the group with 10 points.

Rangel is the Super League Golden Boot winner with 19 goals.

Sime Darby’s flickering hopes of a place in the last eight all but ended when they fell 3-1 to Police at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium.

Croatian striker Mateo Roskam penalty goal in the seventh minute was all Sime Darby could muster up as Police’s Ali Ashfaq (22nd), Charles Souza Chad (81st) and Bobby Gonzales (90th) got into the scoring act.

The biggest surprise of the night came at the Darulaman Stadium when Kedah beat Perak 2-0 in their final Group B fixture. The win knocked Perak out of the quarter-finals.

Kedah’s win came courtesy of captain Baddrol Bakthiar’s sensational performance.

The midfielder first set up striker Billy Mehmet for Kedah’s opener in the 74th minute before putting the game beyond Perak’s reach with a goal three minutes later.

The win enabled Kedah to clinch top spot in the group with 10 point while Perak dropped to third with eight points.

Terengganu, who held Sarawak to a goalless draw at the Sultan Ismail Stadium, finished second in the group with nine points.

The first leg of the quarter-finals will be held on Oct 3 and 4, while the second leg will be held on Oct 17 and 18.

In the quarter-finals, Kedah will face Kelantan, Terengganu take on Super League champions Johor Darul Ta’zim, Selangor play against Felda United and Police meet defending champions Pahang.
