PETALING JAYA: Leaders Police’s firepower have put them as firm favourites when they take on T-Team in a Group D match at the Sultan Ismail stadium on Tuesday.

Their strikers Bobby Gonzales, Ashfaq Ali and Charles Souza Chad have banged in nine goals in three matches to top the group with nine points. Selangor are second with six, while T-Team have collected three points and Sime Darby prop up the group without a point.

The trio also amassed a remarkable 66% of their team’s goal in their Premier League with – Maldivian Ashfaq scoring 18 goals, Brazilian Chad with 16 and Bobby eight – to win the second tier competition in June.

Sabahan Bobby said that despite being in pole position for the quarter-finals, they have no plans to take their foot of the pedal against T-Team.

The international credited the understanding between the strikers is the reason behind their success.

“We are in a very comfortable position at this stage ... we just need a win and a draw to seal our last eight berth but we want to win all our matches,” said the 30-year-old player.
“We communicate well on the pitch and I personally think I have a sort of telepathic connection with Ashfaq. We just know where to pass the ball when we are playing.

“I have scored three goals to date, averaging a goal in a match but I want more. My target is the Malaysia Cup Golden Boots award this year.”

His prowess has not gone unnoticed as he was called up by new national coach Dollah Salleh in the friendly against Tajikistan on Aug 8. Malaysia lost the match 4-1.

Bobby added that his call-up has galvanised his resolve to improve on his strike rate.

“I joined Police last season to don national colours. My gamble worked and now my plan is to become a regular in the national team.”
