GEORGE TOWN: Mohd Amri Yahyah scored a goal and set up another two to steer Johor Darul Ta’zim to a 3-1 victory over Penang at the City Stadium in their Malaysia Cup Group C clash.
It was JDT’s second win in three matches, allowing the Super League champions to maintain their Group C lead at the halfway mark of the group stage.
Penang, playing without Angolan striker Titi Buengo, who had to return to Paris due to a family bereavement, remain winless.
Amri, returning from suspension, was reinstated into JDT’s starting eleven at the expense of national striker Norshahrul Idlan Talaha.
In front of a packed City Stadium hosting Penang’s first Malaysia Cup tie in six years, the hardworking Amri was clearly the best player on the slippery pitch.
In the 13th minute, Amri broke the deadlock. Off a Safiq Rahim corner, Amri directed a back header which flew past a rooted Penang goalkeeper G. Jeevananthan and nestled into the top corner at the far post.
This time, the roles were reversed as Amri’s cross from the right was swept home from the top of the box by his former Selangor team-mate Safiq.
Penang pulled a goal back in the 66th minute when South Korean Lee Gil-hoon turned his marker Aidil Zafuan Razak before shooting past Izham Tarmizi.
But straight from the restart, Amri galloped down the right wing before delivering a perfect cross for Jorge Diaz, who had just replaced his Argentina compatriot Figueroa moments earlier, to nod home.
Kelantan meanwhile continue to breathe down JDT’s neck after securing a 3-0 win over Armed Forces at the Shah Alam Stadium. It was the Red Warriors’ second victory of the campaign.
Captain Mohd Badhri Radzi scored a brace at the 60th and 88th minute. Earlier, Liberian striker Francis Doe put the east coast side ahead in the 51st minute.
