Football buddies relish trip to Munich’s Allianz Junior camp

PETALING JAYA: Bosom buddies S. Linggeswaran and N. Kumaravel will be reunited for the Allianz Junior Football Camp (AJFC) hosted by German champions Bayern Munich in Munich from Aug 20-26.

The youngsters attended a two-day trial in Shah Alam in June and Linggeswaran finished in the top three with Muhammad Adam Mohd Rais and Wan Muhammad Iqmal Wan Nizam to earn a berth for the trip.

Kumaravel, who failed to qualify, redeemed himself by gaining a wildcard slot at the Allianz Junior Football Asia Camp in Bali from Aug 1-4.

The 16-year-old was picked by former Bayern Munich youth coach Werner Kern ahead of 33 participants aged between 14 and 16 from six Asian countries – Malaysia, Thailand, China, Taiwan, South Korea and Indonesia.

A jubilant Kumaravel admitted he was heartbroken after missing out at the Shah Alam trials.

“I was disappointed at missing the direct slot but Linggeswaran told me I still have a chance to join him if I win the wildcard slot,” said Kumaravel.

“He advised me not to give up and to work harder in Bali. Thanks to his advice it paid off.”

The Shah Alam lads also share the same ambition of representing the national team in the future.

“Linggeswaran and I have been playing football together since we were 10 and we badly wanted to win the trip to Munich,” said Kumaravel.

“It feels great to attend the AJFC with my friend. We hope this trip will motivate us to pursue our dreams.”
