PETALING JAYA: Police skipper Muslim Ahmad has finally arrested the decline in his football career.
The 25-year-old former Harimau Muda A defender is in upbeat mood again after finding success with his new team.
After two seasons in the doldrums with Terengganu (2012) and Johor Darul Ta’zim (2013), he has found a new lease of life with the Premier League outfit.
The cops bagged the Premier League title and will be promoted to the Super League next season.
On Thursday, Police kicked off their Malaysia Cup campaign in Group D on a winning note outplaying Super League side Sime Darby FC 3-0 at the Selayang Stadium.
Muslim said it was good to be back on the right track.
“My game took a turn for the worst a couple of years ago. I lost my place in the national team, too. This year has opened up brightly and I hope to return and play for Malaysia in the AFF Cup,” said Muslim.
At the 2010 AFF Cup, Muslim and Mohd Fadhli Shas, both from the Harimau Muda squad were the pillar of strength in defence en route to Malaysia’s success.
“We were both rookies, then. It was good experience. But somehow I lost focus and drifted away. But now I am happy Police gave me a lifeline. I am prepared to fight my way back into the national team,” said Muslim.
Muslim played pivotal roles in Malaysia’s back-to-back gold medal success with Harimau Muda at the SEA Games in Laos 2009 and Jakarta 2011. He also led the country to qualify for the second round of the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou – after a lapse of 32 years.
However, Muslim’s form took a nosedive after opting out of Harimau Muda to join Terengganu in 2012. He then found himself out of the national team for the last couple of years.
National coach Dollah Salleh gave Muslim his break when he was a coach at Police and it would not be a surprise to see Muslim back in November’s AFF Cup.
