Reuben eyeing Malaysia Cup return

PETALING JAYA: Armed Forces defender K. Reuben just can’t wait to make his return in the Malaysia Cup after being sidelined for six months by a knee injury.

The rightback tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a Super League match in February and had to undergo a corrective surgery. Three other Forces players – centreback Amiridzwan Taj Tajuddin, striker Marlon James and defender Irwan Fadly Idrus — were also forced to miss the action due to injuries.

The injury-hit Gladiators ended up 10 in the 12-team league and avoided relegation to the Premier League on goal difference.

Reuben said he felt helpless watching Forces struggle in the league and was glad the team managed to stay unbeaten in their final five matches to escape relegation.

“The relegation threat cast a black shadow over the team and it was a stressful episode for all of us ... it was painful to see the team struggle in the league,” said the 24-year-old.

“I have now fully recovered from the surgery and can’t wait to return to the team. But I need to strengthen and condition my leg muscles. I hope to play a key role for the team in the Malaysia Cup.”

Reuben now hopes to help Forces make an impact in the Malaysia Cup, which starts in August.

Forces have a good track record in the Malaysia Cup. They were the losing finalists in 2012 and reached the quarter-finals last season.

“Our players showed character when it mattered most to avoid relegation. We need to keep this spirit going when we start our Malaysia Cup campaign,” said Reuben
