PETALING JAYA: The top two teams in the Super League – Pahang and Selangor – retained their positions courtesy of home wins over lower-ranked oppositions.
Pahang defeated T-Team 2-0 on Saturday to consolidate their position at the top of the standings with their sixth straight home win at the Darul Makmur Stadium this season.
Hot-shot Matias Conti of Argentina and national striker Mohd Azamuddin Akil scored a goal each in the second and 57th minutes respectively to enable the Elephants to top the standings with 25 points after 12 matches.
The T-Team defence caved in early in the game after midfielder Mohd Hafiz Kamal’s curling free-kick rebounded off the post and the lurking Conti charged in to score with a low header in the second minute.
Azamuddin doubled the lead when he rose unchallenged to head home past T-Team goalkeeper Sharil Sa’ari in the 57th minute.
T-Team’s new foreign strikers – Luis Dos Santos of Brazil and Jimmy Mulisa of Rwanda – gave Pahang some anxious moments but failed to find the net. Mulisa had the best chance to score but his 48th minute shot from outside the box came off the woodwork.
In Shah Alam, Selangor stayed in touch with Pahang in second spot after edging basement side Perak 1-0 at the Shah Alam Stadium.
Brazilian striker Paulo Rangel scored the crucial goal in the eighth minute.
Both teams were later reduced to 10 men. The Red Giants’ new signing, Rivaldo Silva, was shown the red card by referee Zulkifli Ahmad for elbowing Perak’s Kyaw Zayar Win in the 44th minute while Perak’s Mohd Rafiq Nagoor was sent off after picking a second booking in the 66th minute.
Defending champions Lions XII suffered their second defeat at home when they lost 1-0 to Sime Darby FC at the Jalan Besar Stadium. Midfielder Mohd Syukur Saidin netted the winner for the visitors in the 44th minute.
In Selayang, Kelantan defeated Armed Forces 2-0. Skipper Mohd Badhri Radzi opened accounts in the 44th minute before Liberian striker Francis Doe increased the lead in the 83rd minute.
The soldiers are winless in their last nine matches.
