FAM don't have to wait for the police: Khairy

PETALING JAYA: The Football Association of Malaysia’s (FAM) disciplinary committee can immediately investigate the Larkin Stadium “tunnel fiasco” without having to wait for the police, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

“Based on the account of witnesses and since there is no recording (video) of the incident, the case might not be referred to the court.

“I also believe FAM will not receive any specific details from the police investigation,” he said, commenting on FAM’s decision to delay the investigation of individual or individuals involved in the incident.

He said the police must find concrete evidence to refer the matter to court.

The FAM had let off Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) with a slap on the wrist when the national football governing body imposed only a RM30,000 fine for failing to provide adequate security at the Larkin Stadium during their FA Cup second-round match against T-Team on Feb 1.

FAM had said on Tuesday that they will take action against the individual or individuals involved if the Attorney-General doesn’t pursue the matter.

FAM disciplinary committee chairman Datuk Taufek Abdul Razak had said: “The case is not considered closed yet and the disciplinary committee has two years to act on the offence.”

In response, Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said criticised FAM for not punishing the individual or individuals who started the trouble in the first place which led to the “tunnel incident”. – Bernama
