Modest target for local boys at AFC Futsal Championship

PETALING JAYA: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have set a modest target of reaching the second round for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Futsal Championship in Vietnam from April 30-May 10.

FAM secretary-general Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin is confident that the team, training under coach Maizal Hairi Marzuki, will be able to pull off a surprise or two in the championship despite failing to win any medals at the Myanmar SEA Games last year.

“The men’s futsal team will play a number of friendlies against clubs from Thailand next month to prepare for the championship. We have yet to receive any news about women’s futsal for this year,” he told reporters after announcing the Felda-FAM Futsal tournament at Wisma FAM, Kelana Jaya, here on Tuesday.

Hamidin said that FAM also planned to send the same team for training in Iran as part of their preparations for the 2014 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Futsal Championship, scheduled at the Malawati Stadium in Shah Alam in September.

Meanwhile, the five-day Felda-FAM Futsal Championship, which kicks off at the Malawati Stadium on Wednesday will feature the top 16 teams from last year’s National Futsal League, which ended recently.

Felda United FC, who won the men’s National Futsal League, have been drawn against Selangor PKNS, Kedah, Selangor, Pahang, Quilmes FC, Selangor MPSJ FC and T-Team.

Selangor MPSJ FC, who won the women’s competition, will have Selangor, Kedah, Armed Forces, Felda United FC, Selangor PKNS, Sabah and Police for company.

The men’s and women’s champions will receive RM50,000 each while the runners-up will take RM30,000 each. — Bernama
