PETALING JAYA: The Elephants are back on track – after a shaky start to the season.
Two straight wins against fancied teams Lions XII (1-0) and Johor Darul Ta’zim (3-2) in the FA Cup and Super League respectively have boosted their self-belief.
“We should continue to build on the momentum and improve from game to game. There is still lots to be done, especially in defence,” said skipper Razman Roslan after the dramatic 3-2 win over JDT at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan on Friday.
Pahang went ahead twice through Matias Conti and Fauzi Roslan but JDT bounced back to draw level through Pablo Aimar and Safee Sali before Mohd Hafiz Kamal netted the winner for the home team in stoppage time.
Razman said that although the team are playing better now, they still needed to tighten up the defence, which has conceded six goals in six matches in all competitions.
Pahang have struggled in the FA Cup, squeezing into the second round with a 5-4 win on penalties over Perak after both teams were tied 2-2 on aggregate (after extra-time).
Pahang’s backline is manned by Razman, Mohd Saiful Nizam Miswan and former Queens Park Rangers duo – Jamaican Damion Stewart and British-born Pakistani Zesh Rehman.
New Pahang coach Ron Smith led the east coast side to a winning start in the Charity Shield match against Lions XII (1-0) at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan on Jan 17 but the Malaysia Cup champions then fell in the next two games, going down to Sime Darby FC and Selangor by similar 1-0 margins.
