JDT sends out warning to rivals

PASIR GUDANG: Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) sent a strong warning to their rivals in the upcoming Malaysian football season by thrashing Singapore League defending champions Tampines Rovers 7-1 in a friendly.

JDT, strengthened by the arrival of several national players and former Argentinian stars Pablo Aimar and Luciano Figueroa in the transfer window, made easy work of the island republic champions.

The Southern Tigers took only 38 minutes to open the floodgates when Figueroa put his name on the score sheet in the match played at the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council (MPPG) Stadium on Thursday night.

Figueroa scored again in the 55th minute and national player Mohd Amri Yahyah also scored a brace in the 45th and 62nd minutes.

Aimar (47th), Muhammad Akram Mahinan (83rd) and Mohd Haziq (90th) completed the rout for JDT while Roberto Martinez scored the consolation goal for Tampines in the 66th minute.

Head coach Cesar Ferrando Jimenez was pleased with the fighting spirit shown by his players.

“This friendly is important for us as it allows the players to find their playing rhythm together.

“I am very happy with their performance, especially the younger players, as they followed my instructions and our game play from training,” he said.
