NAYPYITAW: Nation Under-23 football team skipper Mohd Irfan Fazail has urged his team-mates to put up a better performance against Laos on Friday.
The Pontian-born player was paired up with Nazmi Faiz Mansor in midfield in the 2-0 win over Brunei on Tuesday.
They were instrumental in creating Malaysia’s chances which, however, were mostly squandered by the wasteful strikers.
The midfield combination clicked well as an attacking unit but failed to provide enough defensive cover, especially when Brunei mounted fast counter-attacks.
The 22-year-old Irfan said that although they have met – and beaten – the same Laos side several times in friendlies, “it doesn’t mean that the Laotians will be easy meat”.
“Laos will be a tougher proposition compared to Brunei ... they managed to steal a point from Singapore despite playing with 10 men for most of the match,” said Irfan.
“We need to be careful ... in fact, we need to do better and improve on the performance we showed against Brunei. We might have won 2-0 but it’s not enough.
“We expected more goals from that match ... we were a bit disappointed with failing to convert our chances. But the team morale is still high and we are all looking forward to a better showing.”
