PETALING JAYA: Several top youth teams from Brazil, Portugal, South Korea, Germany, Slovakia and Nigeria will compete in the 2nd Frenz Under-16 International Cup (FIC) football tournament, which will be co-hosted by Malaysia and Indonesia, next month.
Frenz United FC (FUFC), the organisers of the 12-team championship, are offering a whopping US$100,000 (RM322,863) in total prize money. The championship is scheduled from Jan 11-26.
FUFC president Datuk Noor Ihsan Hamid said they had invited the Liverpool Under-17 team to play against Frenz United Malaysia in the curtain-raiser at the Selayang Stadium on Jan 4.
“We hope the top-class field will do our players a world good in their future undertakings. The FIC tournament will serve a good exposure to players and coaches as well as to exchange ideas in their bid to raise the level of the game,” Noor Ihsan said at the launch ceremony at the Paradigm Mall in Kelana Jaya yesterday.
Among the confirmed teams are Nigeria’s Rapture FC, who had contributed players to the team who won the FIFA Under-17 Youth World Cup recently.
The others include defending champions Slovakia Under-16, Germany’s Eintrach Frankfurt and Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon.
Frenz United Malaysia are in Group A with Dalian Aerbin (China), Incheon United (South Korea), Besiktas (Turkey), Slovakia Under-16 and Internacional (Brazil).
Group B comprises Frenz United (Indonesia), Sporting Lisbon (Portugal), Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany), Iran Under-16, Rapture FC (Nigeria) and Chonburi FC (Thailand).
