PETALING JAYA: It will be a spectacular scene at the Shah Alam Stadium on Sunday.
Some 80,000 fans will paint the stadium into a sea of red and yellow when Kelantan play Pahang in the Malaysia Cup final. It is the first time the two east coast teams are meeting in the final since the HMS Malaya Cup in 1921.
One thing for sure, both teams will not be short of fan support as tickets have been sold out. Such is the excitement and enthusiasm of the die-hard fans.
Haron Ali of the Kelantan Football Supporters Club from Kota Baru will be the 12th player in the Kelantan team – orchestrating the drum (gendang cina) beat during the final. Haron said fans can listen to the rhythm of the beat ... the “Gomo Kelate Gomo” way in Shah Alam.
“We can be heard in front of 80,000 or 100,000 fans. The lively drum beat will motivate the players and the fans. We have been trained how to raise and lower the drum beat according to the tempo of the game. If the team is down or trailing by a goal ... we have a different beat to slowly work them up ... like a wake up call.
“Then, when we score ... the beat gets louder and faster ... pushing them to go for the kill. It is quite exciting to be part and parcel of the final. Everyone can absorb the Cup final atmosphere,” said Haron, who has been an ardent Kelantan fan for more than 20 years.
For the final, Haron will have a big team of 20 drum players.
“We have hired a van and the drums are in Shah Alam now. When it is an ordinary league match we have a smaller number of about seven drums. But the message is clear we are out there for our team. There used to be times when we got pelted with water bottles when the team fails to respond to our beat. But that was in the past. Now, we have the full support of the red army. They dance to the beat and it makes the final all the more exciting,” said Haron.
