PETALING JAYA: Kelantan midfielder Zairo Anuar Zalani is looking forward to the chance of finally getting his hands on the Malaysia Cup when the Red Warriors take on Pahang in the final at the Shah Alam Stadium on Sunday.
The versatile player came close to capturing the Malaysia Cup with his home state Terengganu in 2011, but the Turtles lost 2-1 to Negri Sembilan.
The Kuala Terengganu player then joined club side T-Team in 2012 but the team were knocked out in the group stages.
This year, he joined East Coast giants Kelantan in search of his first Malaysia Cup glory.
The 32-year-old came off the bench to feature in the Red Warriors’ 1-0 win over Johor Darul Takzim in the FA Cup final in June and that has whetted his appetite for more success.
“This is my second appearance in the Malaysia Cup final and my first with the Red Warriors. Yet, I still feel excited about the final despite my age and experience,” said Zairo.
“We have better players in the team but Pahang have good team spirit and will be extra motivated since this is their first final after 16 years.
“We have a number of experienced players in our team as well and they know how to react in a high-profile match. We are all fired up to retain the Malaysia Cup and bring it back to Kota Baru.”
Coach Bojan Hodak has paired up Zairo with Shakir Shaari in the heart of Kelantan’s midfield, thus allowing skipper Mohd Badhri Radzi to move into a more advanced attacking role.
And Zairo admitted that he has struck up a winning combination with Badhri and Shakir.
“We are combining better now since we’ve been playing more matches together ... it’s a positive sign for the team as well,” said Zairo.
“Our supporters will be another major advantage for us. They’ve been supporting us throughout the season and will be our 12th man in the final.”
