Pahang players celebrate as their Sarawak counterparts look dejected after the final whistle of the Malaysia Cup semi-final which Pahang won on 4-2 aggregate.
KUCHING: Despite failing to book a ticket to the Malaysia Cup final, Sarawak head coach Robert Alberts is adamant that the team’s accomplishments this season have been a big success.
Sarawak, who won this season’s Premier League title, surprised experts and fans by qualifying for the Malaysia Cup semi-finals. They have earned promotion to the Super League, were unbeaten in the Premier League and have not lost at home in the league and Malaysia Cup.
The Dutchman is not blaming anyone despite failing to qualify for the Malaysia Cup final after the 1-1 draw in the second-leg at home to go out on a 2-4 aggregate to Pahang.
“We certainly deserved to win the match for a place in the final because we played better than Pahang and created so many scoring chances.
“We dominated the game but we are out because we could not kill off the game,” said Alberts.
Commenting on his team’s success this season, Alberts said everyone should feel happy and proud as Sarawak are among the top four teams in the country.
“I did not expect to reach the semis. We are proud to be among the elite teams like Kelantan, Armed Forces and Pahang,” he added.
He said the success was achieved because of the commitment from the players and the management.
“Our team have a mix of experienced and young players and they will find success at some point.”
To prepare for next season’s Super League campaign Alberts hopes the management will buy better quality players.
In addition to local players and the two foreign players (Muamer Salibasic and Guy Bwele), the Bujang Senang team will also get an Asian import and according to the president of the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) Datuk Sudarsono Osman, they will also be looking to Australia for players.
