KUCHING: One minute was all it took for substitute Fauzi Roslan to steer Pahang into the Malaysia Cup final Saturday night.
Fauzi, who replaced Matias Conti in the 73rd minute, scored with his touch to erase Bobby Gonzales’ 32nd minute opener for Sarawak at the State Stadium in Kuching.
The 1-1 draw sees Pahang, who won the first leg 3-1, go through 4-2 on aggregate.
Pahang will now play defending champions Kelantan in the final at the Shah Alam Stadium on Nov 3. The Red Warriors had edged Armed Forces 4-3 on aggregate on Friday.
For a while, the Crocs’ magical form at home worked to perfection, capped by former international Bobby’s goal.
He had a couple more sitters in front of goal which he unfortunately squandered.
Midfielder Joseph Kallang Tie, who was making a return from suspension, added more depth to the engine room and also had a goal-bound shot saved by man-of-the-match Mohd Khairul Azhan Khalid, the Pahang goalkeeper.
Just when it looked like Sarawak were gaining momentum – and capable of scoring a second that would see them advancing on the away goal rule – tragedy struck.
Supersub Fauzi popped up from nowhere to tuck in the crucial goal in the 74th minute.
This put Pahang 4-2 ahead on aggregate and very much in the driver’s seat.
Despite the vociferous support of the 22,000 home crowd, Sarawak just could not find a way past the solid Pahang defence, manned by Damion Stewart.
Sarawak were attempting to reach only their second final since losing to Brunei in 1999.
This will be Pahang’s first appearance in the final in 16 years. They last won the Cup in 1992.
