PETALING JAYA: Armed Forces striker Marlon James is not losing sleep ahead of the crucial Malaysia Cup second-leg semi-final match against Kelantan at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru on Friday.
The Gladiators suffered a 2-1 loss in the first leg at the Selayang Stadium last week and it was the second time in the competition that the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines striker failed to find the back of the net.
Marlon was kept in check by Kelantan’s towering Nigerian centreback Obinna Nwaneri’s tight marking in the first leg. The prolific goal-getter is hoping to get back to his scoring ways in the second-leg match.
“I don’t really study my opponents before matches ... I just make sure that I play my A game,” said Marlon, who is second on the top goalscorers list with seven goals.
“Obinna is a good player and football is not just about beating a player to win the match ... we have to beat the entire Kelantan team.”
The 37-year-old player pointed out that Forces are still in the race for a spot in the Malaysia Cup final and they can overturn the deficit in Kota Baru.
He added that the Gladiators are not a two-man team, referring to claims that Forces rely on him and skipper Hairuddin Omar to get out of jail.
“It’s quite disrespectful to brand us a two-man team ... all the players work hard and we have always played as a unit,” said a visibly annoyed Marlon.
“We will go out for a win ... we will play an attacking game, which is what we have done throughout the season. We conceded early in the first leg and it’s something we can’t afford to do in the return leg.
“Kelantan were the best team last season in terms of consistency but I believe we were the best football playing team. The tie is far from over and we are targeting an upset in Kota Baru.”
