PETALING JAYA: The national Under-19 side got their AFC Under-19 Group I qualifying campaign off to a poor start – losing 3-1 to hosts China at the Jiaxing Sports Centre Stadium in Jiaxing.
Perhaps the result would have been different had Adam Nor Azlin not missed his 17th-minute spot kick as China came back to make Malaysia pay, with Xiang Baixu bagging a brace in the 32nd and 45th minutes before Wei Shihao added a third in the 83rd minute.
Mohd Alif Haikal Mohd Sabri’s 72nd minute goal proved to be a mere consolation for coach Aminuddin Hussin’s men.
The match proved to be a nightmare for Adam, who was sent off in the 85th minute for a second bookable offence.
In an earlier Group I match, favourites Japan thrashed minnows Macau 6-0 at the Pinghu Sports Centre Stadium.
Malaysia will face Japan at the Jiaxing Sports Center Stadium on Thursday.
The winners of the nine groups, plus the six best second-placed sides and hosts Myanmar, will compete in next year’s Finals.
