Shahril Ishak's fitness will have to be assessed before coach V. Sundramoorthy decides if he can play in the Lions' match against Kedah.
PETALING JAYA: Lions XII coach V. Sundramoorthy is playing mind games ahead of their final Malaysia Cup Group D match against Kedah at the Darul Aman Stadium in Alor Setar Saturday night.
The last day of the group stage is set to be a cracking affair with all four teams still in the running for a berth in the quarter-finals with only one point separating Kedah from the three teams ahead of them.
Premier League champions Sarawak lead the group on goal difference while Lions XII are second and Perak are third although all three teams have seven points after five matches.
Sundram claimed that the Canaries will be under pressure to win, while his side just need a draw to book their quarter-final berth.
“Kedah will be under pressure to beat us but we are focused on getting something in Alor Setar,” said the former Singapore international who guided the Lions XII to the Super League championship this season.
“It will not be easy ... as you see the teams in the Premier League are as strong as the teams in the Super League, there’s no difference.
“We need to be tactically smart; the team needs to be organised and play according to instructions and if it can be done we should be able to get something from the match.”
Sundram added that he will have to assess inspirational skipper Shahril Ishak’s condition first before deciding on whether to play him against Kedah.
“Shahril has been out of the team through injury for a while, his match fitness is in doubt and he needs more time to return to his best,” said Sundram.
The former Kedah superstar pointed out that he has a close relationship with Kedah but reckons that both teams will be professional on the pitch.
“I have a good relationship with them ... they always give us a good training field. We will be professional for the 90 minutes and after the match we will be friends again.”
