Caretaker coach P. Maniam watching Selangor toil to a 1-1 draw against Armed Forces at the Selayang Stadium on Tuesday.
PETALING JAYA: It’s back to the drawing board for Selangor after failing to make the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals for the first time in a long while.
This also means that the 32-time Malaysia Cup champions will end the season empty-handed for the third consecutive season.
Selangor caretaker coach P. Maniam admitted that even he can’t remember when was the last time that the Red Giants had failed to get past the group stages in the Malaysia Cup competition.
“We have a rich footballing tradition ... and to miss the quarter-finals is a big blow. In my playing days, we never failed to qualify for the quarter-finals. These are worrying times and we have to arrest the decline,” said a disappointed Maniam after watching his side toil to a 1-1 draw against Armed Forces in Group A at the Selayang Stadium on Tuesday.
“I really thought we could beat Forces. After a pep talk at half-time, the team played at a frenetic pace and attacked Forces vigorously. But we still fell short.”
Selangor are set to finish at the bottom of Group A after managing just three points from five matches. Their last game against Johor in Shah Alam on Saturday will be of academic interest.
The race for the two quarter-final slots in Group A is still wide open, with Forces and Sime Darby FC the frontrunners as they only need a draw in their last game at the Selayang Stadium on Saturday.
Both teams are tied on eight points while third-placed Johor, on six points, have only a mathematical chance.
Johor have to beat winless Selangor and hope that the game between Forces and Sime Darby does not end in a draw.
Forces coach B. Sathianathan, meanwhile, was far from pleased with his strikers’ performance against Selangor and has warned them to buck up for the game against Sime Darby.
“Our finishing definitely needs tweaking before we play Sime Darby,” he said.
