Junior Eldstal is down with food poisoning, forcing coach Ong Kim Swee to find another midfielder to partner skipper Mohd Irfan Fazail.
KUANTAN: National Under-23 skipper Mohd Irfan Fazail is ready to partner any midfielder for the Merdeka Tournament final against Myanmar at the Darul Makmur Stadium on Saturday night.
Team coach Ong Kim Swee partnered Irfan with hard-tackling Junior Eldstal in the win over Singapore (1-0) and Myanmar (2-1).
However, Eldstal has come down with food poisoning, forcing Kim Swee to pick either attack-minded S. Sivanesan, playmaker Nazmi Faiz Mansor or rookies Saiful Ridzuwan Selamat and Mohd Nasir Basharuddin.
Irfan said that “he has no preference as to who he partners and it will be the coach’s call”.
“Everyone has been training hard and we are all very committed to the team. I believe the players who make the squad will give their 100% to the team,” said the a 22-year-old Pontian local.
“We have to be careful of Myanmar as they have fast attacking players who will punish you if you lose focus. We have to be on our toes.
“I hope more fans will come to the stadium and support us. The fans’ support makes a big difference to us.”
Myanmar captain Kyaw Zayar Win said they are prepared to make amends for their 2-1 loss to Malaysia on Monday.
The playmaker who was substituted during the match on Monday after picking up an ankle injury added that Malaysia have had a great run to reach the final.
“Malaysia have too many strong players on the team and it’s quite hard to pick which one of them can hurt us,” said Zayar Win who sat out in their 2-0 win over Singapore on Wednesday.
“I returned to training on Thursday but have yet to train with the team. I hope to be ready to play in the final.”
