S. Sivanesan leads the squad in training. He has yet to score in the Merdeka Tournament and hopes that the final against Myanmar is when he finally does it.
KUANTAN: National Under-23 player S. Sivanesan is keeping his fingers crossed he will be in the starting line-up for the Merdeka Tournament final against Myanmar at the Darul Makmur Stadium on Saturday night.
Being the Malaysia Cup joint top scorer with five goals won him a spot on the team but Sivanesan has yet to find the back of the net so far.
The midfielder has however raked up three assists in two matches and is the most offensive midfielder, with a lethal right foot to boot.
The Negri Sembilan player reckons that the Merdeka Tournament final will be the perfect stage for him to show off his scoring prowess.
“Maybe I was too eager to score and ended up wasting chances ... but I’m feeling much more confident after qualifying to the final,” said the former Harimau Muda A player.
“It has been some time since I played with the national Under-23 team but we are all on the same page now after a few matches and I think I can contribute positively to the team if selected for the match.
“It’s great to be back in the team after some time and being in contention for the SEA Games squad in December but a goal in the final would be the cherry on the cake.”
The Kuala Lumpur-born player added the final will be tougher and they have to forget about their 2-1 win over Myanmar on Monday.
“Myanmar will be much more aggressive in the final ... they have good attacking players and I think we need to give extra attention to them,” added Sivanesan.
