KUANTAN: Myanmar team manager Tin Myint Aung believes divine intervention and luck helped his team qualify for Saturday’s showdown against Malaysia in the Merdeka Tournament.
Myanmar registered a 2-0 win over Singapore at the Temerloh Mini Stadium on Wednesday to sneak into the final.
Goals from Kyaw Ko Ko (15th minute) and Soe Kyaw Kyaw (89th) were good enough to see them edge Thailand, who fell to a 3-0 defeat to the Malaysians at the Darul Makmur Stadium.
Myanmar and Thailand ended up with four points after the group matches but Myanmar qualified for the final on a better goal difference.
Mying Aung said that his players did well to score two goals but their place in the final would not have been possible if Malaysia had not beaten the Thais.
He also reckons his side will be better prepared for the final against the Malaysians who beat them 2-1 in the group match on Monday.
“Our 2-0 win over Singapore was an all-round effort by my players as we needed more than two goals to qualify for the final,” said the former international.
“I believe in divine intervention and also luck. The fact that Malaysia won 3-0 gave us the upper hand to advance into the final.”
Singapore assistant coach, K. Balagumaran said the tournament had given them the chance to test out their youngsters and they have done well.
Singapore play Thailand in the third-fourth classification match at the Darul Makmur Stadium Saturday (5.30pm).
“I said earlier it’s an opportunity for the younger players to prove themselves,” said Balagumaran, who filled in for the suspended head coach V. Sundramoorthy.
“We have many injury concerns at the moment but those who played gave their best despite the odds. It’s a big plus to see the boys putting in a lot of effort as a team.”
