Junior Eldstal has his foot checked after an injury sustained in training. Eldstal believes he is unlucky as the ball just refuses to hit the back of the net.
KUANTAN: National Under-23 rising star Junior Eldstal is at his wit’s end after failing to find the back of the net yet again in the ongoing Merdeka Tournament in Kuantan.
The midfielder starred for the team in the 2-1 come-from-behind win over Myanmar by chalking up his second assist in as many games in the competition.
Eldstal turned provider for skipper Irfan Fazail’s equaliser in the 64th minute which sparked Malaysia’s comeback after going down 1-0 to Myanmar. He also had his goal disallowed in the 26th minute and rattled the crossbar in the 75th minute.
Last Saturday, the 21-year-old player set up A. Thamil Arasu’s goal in the 1-0 win over Singapore, again coming close to opening his goal-scoring account but his attempt hit the crossbar during the match.
Eldstal, who plays for Premier League champions Sarawak, was also the target of several rash tackles from Myanmar and he gave back as hard he received in the match and picked up a booking in the 70th minute.
“I don’t know what to do. The ball just doesn’t want to go in ... maybe I’m saving it for the final,” joked the towering midfielder who will celebrate his 22nd birthday on Sept 16.
“This is the second time my attempt has hit the crossbar and I also had a goal disallowed ... I have been unlucky.
“The match was hard and I had less time with the ball as three Myanmar players were on my back. I’m unfortunate to pick up the yellow card. It was a 50-50 challenge and I was taught to not back off from a tackle.”
The hard-tackling midfielder is expected to be rested for the final group match against Thailand Wednesday after playing two matches in three days and said that he will use the time to reflect on his performance with the team.
“Of course I wouldn’t mind if I am rested for the next match. We are a team and the other players have the potential and can come on and play well,” added Eldstal.
