PETALING JAYA: The Harimau Muda C team will be out to emulate their success in Europe when they begin their campaign in the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-19 championship which kicks off in Surabaya on Monday.
National Under-19 coach Aminddun Hussein said the boys are in high spirits after winning the Under-19 Miltal Cup tournament in Slovakia last month.
Six teams from five countries – the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Hungary and hosts Slovakia competed in the Miltal tournament.
The Malaysians wrapped up their preliminaries in style defeating Czech outfit SK Slavia Praba Prague and Slovenia’s Domzale FC by identical 3-1 scores to top the group. In the final, they downed hosts MSK Zilina 6-0.
“We had a a good training-cum-competition exercise for the boys during our 37-day stint in Slovakia. The boys are in high spirits and we should be able to do well in the AFF championships. First, we need to get to the semi-finals,” said a confident Aminuddin on Saturday before the team left for Surabaya.
Malaysia play Myanmar in the opening game in Group B on Tuesday. The other teams in the group are hosts Indonesia, Vietnam. Thailand and Brunei.
After the AFF championships, the Harimau Muda C boys will be playing in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-19 qualifiers in China from Oct 8-12. They are drawn with hosts China, Japan and Macau.
