KUANTAN: Thai Selection coach Kairung Threejagsang has picked Malaysia as favourites to win the Merdeka Tournament, which kicks off at the Darul Makmur Stadium on Saturday.
The Thais, who have sent a team comprising National Under-23 players and senior players from the Thai Premier League and Thai Division Two, will open their campaign against the Myanmar Under-23 side today.
Threejagsang has set a target of reaching the final for his men despite their short preparation time.
“We can fight any team in the competition ... we have the ability. And our target is to reach the final,” Threejagsang said at a press conference Friday.
“We couldn’t bring our full squad because our local league is still going on ... but we have a large pool of players to pick from.
“Malaysia will be the favourites ... they are playing at home and have a strong squad. Besides, they have won the SEA Games gold medal.”
Myanmar team manager Tin Myint Aung described the Merdeka Tournament as an important competition ahead of the SEA Games, which they will host in December.
Myint Aung claimed that seven of his players were down with food poisoning and that “this has given me a headache” ahead of their match against Thailand.
“This tournament is an important part of our preparations for the SEA Games. Every team want success and it’s the same for us,” he said.
