Muhd Ariff Farhan Mohd Isa: 'The stint in Europe was a big eye-opener for me. The coach moved me to the leftback position as there are so many midfielders in the team. I’m glad that the move has worked for me.'
KUANTAN: Youngster Muhd Ariff Farhan Mohd Isa feels like he’s living a dream after being named in the National Under-23 squad for the Merdeka Tournament.
The 17-year-old played a key role for the National Under-21 side when they won the Newspaper Cup in Vietnam last year. He even scored a goal in the competition from midfield.
The Bukit Jalil Sports School student was then called up by national Under-23 coach Ong Kim Swee for the playing-cum-training stint in Europe.
The Kedah player, who started his career as a midfielder before being moved to leftback, has continued to flourish.
“It’s a dream come true for me to be selected to play in the Merdeka Tournament. To be honest, I thought I would be dropped from the squad,” said Ariff, who hails from Pokok Sena.
“The stint in Europe was a big eye-opener for me. The coach moved me to the leftback position as there are so many midfielders in the team. I’m glad that the move has worked for me.”
The teenager will have to compete against the more established Mohd Zuber Azmi and Nazirul Naim Che Hashim for the leftback slot.
“There are so many senior players in the team who are much more experienced. I will have to work doubly hard to break into the starting line-up,” said Ariff.
“Zuber had featured with the national team and Nazirul is another experienced player. It will be hard to upstage them but I’m prepared to give 100% if the coach picks me ahead of them.”
