PETALING JAYA: Striker Ahmad Hazwan Bakri has been ruled out of the national Under-23 team for the Merdeka Tournament in Kuantan from Sept 7-14.
The 22-year-old Hazwan was named in the preliminary 25-man squad for the competition but he picked up a hamstring injury during training at Wisma FAM last Friday.
“I’m really disappointed to pick up an injury at this stage. I can only blame my rotten luck for it,” said a heartbroken Hazwan Monday.
“The Merdeka Tournament is making a comeback after a five-year hiatus and it’s being held at home. We have a good chance of winning it and I badly wanted to play for the team.
“I have seen the team doctor. There is a minor tear on my hamstring and I will probably be sidelined for a week.”
The squad left Kuala Lumpur on Sunday to set up their base in Kuantan. They will play a friendly match against UiTM on Tuesday.
The Labuan-born Hazwan joined the squad in 2011 and was the Harimau Muda A’s top scorer when they finished fourth in the S-League in 2012.
The lethal finisher was expected to lead the team’s attack in the Merdeka Tournament based on his experience.
“I have been working hard for almost five month in Europe. The Merdeka Tournament is the biggest tournament before the Myanmar SEA Games in December. It is a blow to miss it,” added the former Kuala Lumpur player.
“I will now have to start from the bottom again to impress the coach. I want to be in the SEA Games squad. There is a stiff fight for places in the team and I have to work doubly hard after this.”
