JOHOR BARU: Johor FA president Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has blasted the quality of referees in the country and wondered if bookies have cast their influence on the men in black.
He said that the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) should look into the decisions made in several matches of late.
Tunku Ismail cited the recent incident where he confronted a referee during the Malaysia Cup match involving Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) and Felda United at the Larkin Stadium. JDT won the game 1-0.
A 93-second video, which went viral on YouTube, showed Tunku Ismail facing up to the referee during half-time to protest against a decision.
Tunku Ismail explained that he was merely asking the referee the reason for cancelling out an earlier goal scored by JDT in the match.
“A JDT player was goal-bound and was fouled by a Felda United player, who happened to be the last man in the team’s defence. The referee, however, waved play-on until we scored,” he claimed.
“However, the referee disallowed the goal and only issued a yellow card to the Felda United player. Basic rules apply that the last person to foul a player in a goal-scoring opportunity should be given an automatic red card.”
Tunku Ismail added that Johor FA had sent videos and official letters to FAM over referees’ questionable decisions that had marred JDT matches but “we have yet to receive any reply from the governing body”.
He also called on the FAM to conduct thorough checks on referees to see if any of them had been approached by bookies.
“Until now FAM have done nothing to solve this refereeing problem, which will drive away the fans from the stadium,” he said, adding that other teams in the Super League and the Premier League had also become the victims of such decisions.
Tunku Ismail said that FAM should consider making refereeing a professional job instead of just for part-timers.
“If they (FAM) do not have the funds for it, the Johor FA will assist them in any way possible, including giving financial support, as we want professional referees in the country so that the standard and quality of Malaysian football will rise,” he said.
