PETALING JAYA: Croatian hot-shot Alen Guc scored a brace, including a penalty in stoppage time, to help Premier League outfit Kedah hold Super League champions Lions XII to a 2-2 draw in their opening Malaysia Cup Group D match at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
The Lions’ inspirational skipper Shahril Ishak opened accounts for the home team Tuesday night with an early goal in the 11th minute before Guc equalised in the 23rd minute.
The Canaries fell behind again when Shafiq Ghani netted for the Singaporeans in the 66th minute. Just when the hosts thought they had done enough to bag all three points, defender Shakir Hamzah turned villain by conceding a penalty in the 93rd minute.
It was a rare feat by the Canaries, who become only the second team to come away with a precious point from the artificial pitch of the Jalan Besar Stadium this season. Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) are the only other team to have held the Lions XII to a draw at home in the Super League this year.
Another Premier League side who pulled off a shocking result Tuesday night was Sime Darby FC, who defeated last year’s Malaysia Cup runners-up Armed Forces 4-3 in a Group A match at the Selayang Stadium.
Togaba Kontiwa of Togo bagged a double in the fourth and 23rd minutes while Hadzirun Hamid (32nd) and Fazrul Hazli (47th) added a goal each for Sime Darby.
The soldiers got theirs through an own goal by Firdauz Fauzi (17th), Irwan Fadli Idrus (59) and Venice Elphi (77th).
In another Group A match, Selangor could only hold Premier League side Johor to a 0-0 draw at the Pasir Gudang stadium.
At the Shah Alam Stadium, Patrick Ronaldinho Wleh was the toast in PKNS FC’s 2-0 win over Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) in a Group B match. The Liberian scored in the 19th and 58th minutes.
In another match from the same group, T-Team edged Felda United 1-0 at the MBPJ Stadium.
