Marlon James, winner of last season's Malaysia Cup Golden Boot, will be sitting out ATM's opener due to suspension. He says his team won't miss him too much as they are hungry to win.
PETALING JAYA: Its deja vu again for Armed Forces striker Marlon James as his team gears up for their Malaysia Cup Group A clash against Sime Darby at the Selayang Stadium Tuesday.
Marlon will miss the match through suspension, just as he missed last year’s opener of the Malaysia Cup. The Gladiators reached the final last season but were edged 3-2 by Kelantan in the final.
Forces’ coach B. Sathianathan will have to rely on his other old warhorses Hairuddin Omar and Mohd Nizaruddin Yusof to lead the attack in the absence of James.
The Saint Vincent and Grenadines striker who grabbed the Malaysia Cup Golden Boot last season with 12 goals said that his teammates can get the job done against Premier League runners-up Sime Darby.
“It’s basically the same with me ... I’ll have to sit out our opening match like last season but I don’t think my team will miss me too much,” said Marlon who captured the Super League Golden Boot award with 16 goals this season.
“We had been working hard in training to prepare for the Malaysia Cup. We have Hai-0 (Hairuddin Omar) and Nizaruddin in the team, both of them can get us the goals.”
Marlon added that the Gladiators have moved on from their disappointing Super League campaign. Forces who were the front-runner in the title race ended the season in sixth position.
The 36-year-old said that determination, discipline and dedication from the players will be vital in ensuring they don’t end the season empty-handed.
“We were the better team in the league but unfortunately we could only finish sixth in the league,” said a dejected James.
“However, nothing has changed for us in the Malaysia Cup. We want to win titles. In fact, we will be hungrier to win the Malaysia Cup after coming close to winning it last season.”
