PETALING JAYA: Armed Forces coach B. Sathianathan has warned his players to maintain their discipline in the Malaysia Cup competition, which kicks off on Tuesday.
Sathia is still reeling from watching Forces collect a single point from their last five Super League match due to suspensions and injuries.
The Gladiators eventually finished sixth despite being strong contenders for the Super League crown.
And the 55-year-old coach knows that he can ill-afford any indiscipline because his squad lack strength in depth.
And any suspensions or injuries could very well derail his team’s hopes in the Malaysia Cup, where they are in Group A with Super League runners-up Selangor and Premier League sides Sime Darby and Johor.
“We missed Marlon (James) through suspension and Hairuddin Omar through injury ... losing these two players took a toll on the team in the League,” said Sathia.
“We only have 15 quality players in the squad now, so injuries and suspensions will be a big blow to us. It’s all about discipline ... there’s no point arguing with the referees and picking up unnecessary bookings.
“We’ll also work on recovery sessions to ensure that the injured players can make a quick return to the team.”
The former national coach has a good record in the Malaysia Cup competition, having guided Kelantan to the final in 2009 (lost to Negri) and 2010 (beat Negri) before his suspension by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) in 2011.
In 2012, he led Forces to the final against former team Kelantan. Forces lost 3-2 in extra-time.
The Gladiators have a fair chance of advancing to the knock-out stage this time but but Sathia prefers to be wary of their group opponents.
“You cannot look down on the Premier League sides. We were a Premier League side when we entered the final last season,” said Sathia.
