PETALING JAYA: Midfielder D. Kenny Palraj has made a strong claim for a berth in the National Under-23 side for next month’s Merdeka Tournament.
The former Perak President’s Cup player came out tops in a fitness test conducted at the National Sports Institute (NSI) here Friday.
The 20-year-old Kenny scored the highest reading in the Yo-Yo Test (Level 22.4).
Developed by Danish football physiologist Jens Bangsbo, it tests footballers’ aerobic endurance fitness. And Kenny’s result is proof that his five-month training stint in Europe with the Harimau Muda A squad has paid off.
The Merdeka Tournament will be held at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan from Sept 7-14.
The holding midfielder was called up to the Harimau Muda A by coach Ong Kim Swee after impressing in the VFF Newspaper Cup Under-21 tournament in Vietnam last year.
Despite recording the highest score in the test, Kenny said that he would continue to work harder.
“Fitness has always been my advantage but it’s just one part of football ... I think I still need to improve on other facets of my game,” said Kenny Friday.
“It’s the dream of every footballer to play in – and win – competitions with the national team. I hope my fitness level will lead to me being considered for the Merdeka Tournament by the coach.
“I’m among the new boys in the squad this time around, but the coach has not decided on the team and I’ll work harder to impress him.”
Commenting on his impressive score in the test, Kenny said that he had reached level 22 before and “I’m glad that I have improved”.
“I did expect to reach this level, I had worked hard for it and I’m glad that my football is improving,” said Kenny.
The Under-23 team are preparing for December’s Myanmar SEA Games. The Merdeka Tournament will be the team’s preparation for the SEA Games.
Kim Swee’s men are also scheduled to play against the Bangladesh national team in a friendly in Kuantan on Aug 22.
