PETALING JAYA: Divers Cheong Jun Hoong and Wendy Ng Yan Yee will be reunited for the Incheon Asian Games next month as Malaysia seek to defend their silver medal in the women’s 3m springboard synchro event.
The Myanmar SEA Games gold medal pairing of Jun Hoong-Wendy have featured in five out of the six rounds in the Diving World Series (DWS) – doing reasonably well to claim a bronze in the Moscow leg.
But they were split up for the Diving World Cup in Shanghai, Glasgow Commonwealth Games and, supposedly, for the Asiad as well.
Wendy was overlooked in favour of Pandelela Rinong as head coach Yang Zhuliang preferred Pandelela-Jun Hoong for the major events.
He viewed them as a stronger combination and with a better chance of challenging for honours, especially for Commonwealth Games gold medal.
The plan failed as Pandelela suffered a knee injury before the World Cup.
The two pairs fielded in Glasgow – Jun Hoong-Loh Zhiayi and Wendy-Nur Dhabitah Sabri – fared miserably, finishing fifth and sixth respectively.
It wasn’t the first time Wendy had been overlooked. At the World Championships in Barcelona last year, Wendy was deemed “not good enough” although she and Jun Hoong made an impressive debut in the DWS – clinching bronze in the Moscow, Edinburgh and Guadalajara legs. They also claimed bronze in the US Grand Prix in Fort Lauderdale.
With Pandelela now ruled out from the springboard discipline, so as not to aggravate her injury, Zhuliang has no choice but to reunite Jun Hoong and Wendy.
“Jun Hoong will team up with Wendy again in Incheon,” confirmed Zhuliang on Saturday.
“It is a bit too much to expect the girls to fight for the gold medal, but we certainly want them to retain the silver we won (through Leong Mun Yee-Wendy) in Guangzhou four years ago.
“We can count on them to deliver.”
