National diver Cheong Jun Hoong (left) hopes to do better at the Asian Games in September, - GLENN GUAN/ The Star
GLASGOW: Olympian Cheong Jun Hoong's form has taken a nosedive in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
It was only a month ago that the 24-year-old Jun Hoong won the women's 10m synchronised platform silver medal with Leong Mun Yee at the 19th FINA Diving World Cup in Shanghai.
It was the best achievement of her diving career since joining the national team in 2013.
However, Jun Hoong is not going to mope around. Instead, she has pledged to be better prepared for her next two international assignments – the Incheon Asian Games in September and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
"Nothing has gone right for me, so far. I’m disappointed with myself … it’s not my best performance. My standard is quite high and what I’ve done here is simply not up to the mark," said a disappointed Jun Hoong after finishing eighth in the women's 1m springboard final with a score of 260.00 at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh on Friday.
Jennifer Abel of Canada won the gold medal with 287.25 points while Australia's Maddison Keeney (281.95) took silver and Esther Quin (278.65) the bronze.
"I wasn’t able to adapt to the conditions here. I must also admit that it was a tough field," said Jun Hoong.
Earlier, in the women’s 10m synchronised platform event, Jun Hoong-Mun Yee finished fourth (298.92 points) behind the other Malaysian pair of Pandelela Rinong-Nur Dhabitah Sabri (300.12).
Canada’s Meaghan Benfeito-Roseline Filion took the gold with 310.65 points while England’s Sarah Barrow-Tonia Couch (307.92) took silver.
But Jun Hoong is confident the divers can rise again.
"We have a good coach (Yang Zhuliang) and I believe we are already making waves in the pool. I will compete as long as my body can take it … even after the 2016 Olympics," said Jun Hoong, who credited the coach for her rise in the diving competition.
