PETALING JAYA: Diver Pandelela Rinong will only compete in two events at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Gold medal prospect Pandelela, who sprained her left knee in training in China two weeks ago, has been scratched from the women’s 3m springboard synchro event. Pandelela was slated to partner Cheong Jun Hoong.
The Sarawakian will only defend her 10m platform individual title and partner Leong Mun Yee in the platform synchro.
Pandelela was forced to pull out of both the synchro events at last week’s World Cup in Shanghai.
The 21-year-old only competed in the 10m platform individual and the total of 15 dives (preliminary, semi-final and final) took its toll as she ended up sixth.
Malaysia coach Yang Zhuliang said it would be too taxing for Pandelela to compete in three events given her current condition.
“She has yet to recover from the injury. She cannot do three events over four days of competition (July 30-Aug 2).
“She is not fully fit and I do not want her to aggravate her injury as we need to think of the Incheon Asian Games (in South Korea in September),” said Zhuliang.
Zhuliang will now have to decide who to field in the 3m springboard synchro.
He has three divers – Wendy Ng Yan Yee, Jun Hoong or Mun Yee – in mind.
But chances are Jun Hoong and Mun Yee will get the nod. Jun Hoong-Mun Yee finished seventh in the event at the World Cup last week. They also snatched a silver for Malaysia in the 10m platform synchro.
On Malaysia’s chances at the Games, Zhuliang said: “I think we can better our three-medal haul at the last Games in New Delhi in 2010. Ooi Tze Liang (men’s 10m platform) and Jun Hoong (women’s 3m springboard) did well in Shanghai, so there is hope there apart from the synchro events.”
