PETALING JAYA: Ooi Tze Liang earned a timely boost ahead of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with a fifth-place finish in the 10m platform individual final at the Diving World Cup in Shanghai.
The 20-year-old posted a career best score of 464.85 points in the six-dive competition on Sunday to finish behind former world champion Tom Daley.
Daley, who will defend his title for England at the Games, chalked up 470,35 points to finish fourth.
China’s Yang Jian upset the formbooks, scoring 551.50 points to take the gold ahead of world champion and team-mate Qiu Bo (528.50). Ivan Garcia of Mexico took the bronze with a 504.90 total
Tze Liang qualified for the top 12 final after finishing seventh in the semi-finals with 451.85 points. It was his first appearance in the final of a world-class event. He has now qualified for next year’s six-leg Diving World Series.
Besides Daley, 2008 Beijing Olympic champion Matthew Mitcham of Australia is also another strong contender for gold in Glasgow.
Said Malaysian coach Yang Zhuliang: “Little is known about Mitcham’s current form as he did not compete in Shanghai.
“Tze Liang did well to score more than 450 points. This is his best achievement and it comes through hard work. I hope he can win a medal at the Commonwealth Games.”
At the last Games in New Delhi in 2010, Bryan Nickson Lomas clinched a bronze for Malaysia in the 10m platform individual event.
