PETALING JAYA: Pandelela Rinong bungled her fourth dive to end up empty-handed in the 10m platform individual in the final round of the Diving World Series in Monterrey, Mexico.
Pandelela, who won a silver with Cheong Jun Hoong in the 10m platform synchro on Friday, could only manage a dismal 54.40 points in the fourth dive on Sunday. She eventually finished fifth on 364.50 points in the field of six finalists.
Canadian Meaghan Benfeito claimed the gold with 398.20 points. Bonfeito thus became the first-ever non-Chinese diver to triumph in the event since the series started in 2010.
China’s Liu Huixia settled for the silver with 395.30 points while Mexican Alejandra Estrella collected 369.20 points to finish third.
It was, however, not all gloom and doom for Pandelela. The Sarawak-born diver, however, picked up US$20,000 (RM66,000) for finishing second overall on 78 points in the six-round series. Pandelela was second in the first two legs in Beijing and Dubai before settling for a bronze in London. She came in fifth in Moscow and was fourth in Windsor, Canada.
