PETALING JAYA: Things are not looking good for the men’s national diving team with the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Incheon Asian Games just several months away.

Besides facing a severe shortage of divers, Myanmar SEA Games gold medallist Muhd Nazreen Abdullah and Muhd Danial Sabri are troubled by injuries and have yet to compete in any tournaments this year.

“Nazreen is still troubled by his elbow injury after the SEA Games in December. He is only performing light exercises,” said Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) secretary Edwin Chong.

“As for Danial, he is down with an ear infection and is undergoing treatment. He has yet to train with us this year,” added Edwin.

Sixteen-year-old Sylvester Gaing of Sarawak was supposed to be the saving grace. He was fast-tracked into elite squad at the beginning of the year to boost the depleted team, but was kicked out due to indiscipline.

There are now only three divers – Ooi Tze Liang, Ahmad Amsyar Azman and Chew Yiwei – left to carry on with the international assignments and the situation is unlikely to improve in the next few months.

For the fifth leg of the FINA Diving Grand Prix beginning in Guanajuato, Mexico on Friday, Yiwei is the only Malaysian representative in the men’s category.

Malaysia will be represented by five women divers. They are Loh Zhiayi, Nur Dhabitah Sabri, Traisy Vivien Tukiet, Kam Ling Kar and Jasmine Lai.

“The six divers were supposed to compete in the Canadian GP, the third leg, early this month but it failed to materialise because of problems obtaining their visas on time,” said Edwin.

“As we intend to give the juniors as much exposure as possible ahead of the Commonwealth and Asian Games, we are sending them to Mexico as a replacement.”

It will be the second competition of the year for the juniors as they were in Rostock in February to compete in the German GP.
