PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Pandelela Rinong set herself up for a chance to maintain her perfect podium run in the Diving World Series after she qualified for the 10m platform individual final in the third leg at the London Aquatics Centre in London.
The 21-year-old from Sarawak hung dangerously close to missing out when she only scored 55.10 points in her second dive to plunge to fifth out of six competitors in the first semi-final heat.
Pandelela, however, was back in contention when she scored 76.80 for her subsequent third and fourth attempts.
Pandelela nailed her place in the top-six final when she scored an impressive 80.00 in her final dive to be placed second in her semi-final heat with 356.20 points.
The top three divers from each semi-final advanced to the final and Meaghan Benfeito of Canada was the top qualifier with 361.75 points.
Tonia Couch of Britain secured the last spot from the first semi-final heat with 341.70 points while 2009 world champion Paola Espinosa of Mexico just missed out in fourth with 340.65 points.
Pandelela has had an impressive run in the six-leg series so far, winning silver behind China’s Liu Huixia in Beijing and Dubai last month. But the task is cut out for Pandelela with the return of two-time Olympic champion Chen Ruolin to the field alongside Huixia.
Ruolin was upstaged by Huixia, who was the best qualifier from the second semi-final heat with 390.55 points.
Ruolin notched 379.35 points while Roseline Filion ensured Canada will also have two representatives in the final when she finished third with 356.85 points.
The thing going for Pandelela, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, is her determination not to return empty handed after finishing fourth in the 10m platform synchro final with regular partner Leong Mun Yee on Friday.
