PETALING JAYA: Pandelela Rinong made a breakthrough performance in the Diving World Series with another silver in the second leg of the Diving World Series in Dubai.

The Malaysian, who partnered Leong Mun Yee to take the silver in the 10m platform synchro on Friday, showed her mettle throughout Saturday’s five dives to post a 358.75 total (72.00, 73.95, 68.80, 67.20 and 76.80) for her second straight silver in the women’s 10m platform individual. This is the first time she has won silvers in the individual discipline in one season.

Earlier in the opening leg in Beijing last week, the London Olympic bronze medallist won a silver with 368.50 points.

On Saturday, Liu Huixia of China led from start to finish to take her second straight gold with a total of 400.70 points. Canada’s Roseline Filion was third with a 355.20 total ahead of compatriot Meaghan Benfeito (335.80).

Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia secretary Edwin Chong attributed Pandelela’s performance to hard work during the recent stint in Guangzhou.

“Pandelela has posted near her career best score and this is a good sign as she faces the Commonwealth and Asian Games later this year.

“She has matured and is now diving more consistently. We hope she can maintain her form as the season progresses,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Wendy Ng Yan Yee-Cheong Jun Hoong came close to bagging their first medal of the year in the women’s 3m springboard synchro final.

Wendy-Jun Hoong were second after the first three dives but failed to hold on and eventually settled for fourth with a 274.80 total.

Reigning Olympic champions Shi Tingmao-Wu Minxia won the gold for China with 335.40 points ahead of Mexico’s Arantxa Chavez-Laura Sanchez (286.50) and Italy’s Tania Cagnotto-Francesca Dallape (279.30).

Myanmar SEA Games gold medallists Ahmad Amsyar-Ooi Tze Liang were out of depth in the men’s 3m springboard synchro and finished last out of the six pairs in the final. They amassed 358.92 points.

Germans Stephan Feck-Patrick Hausding stunned the Chinese pairing of Cao Yuan- Lin Yue to take the gold with 432.12 points.

The Chinese pair settled for silver on 423.93 ahead of Ukrainians Oleksandr Gorshkovozav-Illya Kvasha, who garnered 416.70 points.
