Cyclist Fatehah wouldn’t mind some company

GLASGOW: It can be lonely at the top. That is exactly how cyclist Fatehah Mustapa felt after finishing fifth in the Commonwealth Games 500m time trial at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow on Thursday.

She got off the starting block brilliantly to post a personal best of 34.667 but it was still not good enough to threaten the top pack, led by the mighty Anna Meares of Australia.

Meares put up a solid show to defend the gold by rewriting her own Games record. She clocked 33.435 to erase the 33.758 set at the New Delhi Games four years ago.

Australia made it a 1-2 finish when Stephanie Morton took the silver in 34.079. England’s Jess Varnish nicked the bronze in 34.267.

“If you look at the field, there were two Australians, three from England, two from Scotland and even India had three.

“I’m all alone ... sometimes it helps to have company,” said Fatehah.

The only other Malaysian woman cyclist in Glasgow is Ju Pha Som Net, who will be competing in the sprint, time trial and scratch races.

Despite the odds, Fatehah has promised to go all out for as long as she is representing the country.

“I am sorry I could not win the country’s first medal. It is still a proud moment for me to be up there among the world-class riders and race alongside somebody like Anna,” she said.

“My mission is not over yet. I have two more events to go and I will try to achieve better results.

“The team are determined to win medals for the country. We did not get any on the opening day but we will try to end the drought soon.”

Malaysia also fired blanks in the men’s team sprint when the trio of Azizulhasni Awang, Josiah Ng and Muhd Edrus Yunos finished sixth after clocking 45.625.

New Zealand flexed their muscles and shattered the Games record en route to the gold medal with a 43.181 timing.
