PETALING JAYA: After spending just 10 days with the Terengganu Cycling during the recent Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) Julian Winn is looking to make imminent changes as the team’s new sport director.
The 41-year-old Welshman, who arrived just in time for the LTdL which started on Feb 27 and ended on Saturday, said he sees potential in the team but some changes are needed to ensure the riders make progress.
Winn said the riders need to take some responsibility in training and not just rely on the coach.
“I’m aware that they would rely on me for training but they have to take some responsibility, too. A coach doesn’t have to tell everything they need to do.
“I’m not going to knock on their doors and get them out for training. I could coach all 16 of them, but it won’t be proper. They are all adults and they should know what to do,” said Winn.
At the LTdL, Terengganu Cycling failed to land a podium finish with their sprinters Mohd Harrif Salleh and Anuar Manan. Others in the team were Saiful Anuar Aziz, Mohd Zamri Salleh, Mohd Saufi Mat Senan and Adiq Husainie Othman.
“I can say that there is a lot of work to be done and it is possible to do it ... say, in the next five or six months. It is not as if the team are not good.”
“I have some ideas for the team and I hope the management and riders will be open to my ideas,” added Winn.
The team’s sports director, since 2012, was Frenchman Sebastien Duclos. However, his contract was not renewed in December last year. Duclos is now with Brunei team CCN Cycling.
Winn was the sports director for British team Endura Cycling for the past three years. He was also the coach responsible for the success of British cyclist Nicole Cooke, who was the 2008 Beijing Olympic road race champion.
